WVBF and CFMJ

Added two new stations to the AM radio log last night:

At 2300 UTC, I heard WVBF on 1530 kHz transmitting 2 watts 106 miles east-northeast from Middleborough Center, Massachusetts. Signal was S0 to S2 into the CCRadio-SW and CC twin coil ferrite external antenna.

At 0200 UTC, I heard CFMJ on 640 kHz transmitting 50,000 watts 348 miles west-northwest from Lincoln, Ontario. Signal was S0 to S1 into the CC Radio 2E and Terk Advantage external antenna.

A Bounty

Yesterday, EST yesterday rather than UTC yesterday was a bountiful day.

In addition to WPUT, written up in the previous post, which I caught at high noon, I added three new ones last evening.

At 2154Z, WKMC popped up loud and clear (S4) broadcasting comedy recordings on 1370 kHz. WKMC transmits 5 kW from just south of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in Roaring Spring, PA, which is 300 miles to my west-southwest.

At 2336Z, I added WDEA on 1370 kHz to my log with an up and down signal (S0 to S3) out of Ellsworth, Maine, transmitting 5 kW, 300 miles to my northeast.

While tuning around at the top of the hour, I landed on 1270 kHz and at 0003Z a station identification popped up out of the noise --- CJCB with an S1 signal transmitting 10 kW from Sydney, Nova Scotia, 710 miles to my east-northeast. That's my best catch so far this year.

I heard WKMC and WDEA using my C.Crane CCRadio 2E Enhancedradio with the Terk Advantage antenna, whereas I heard CJCB using my C. Crane CCRadio-SW receiver and C. Crane CC Twin Coil Ferrite antenna.

WNSW

At 0030Z today, I added number 160 in my AM radio station log: WNSW, “The Voice of Russia,” on 1430 kHz located in Newark, NJ, 84 miles southwest running 10 kW. The station’s signal swung from one extreme to another over a half-hour period; most of the time it was about an S-3, but at times it was so far down in the mud that it was inaudible and on one occasion it built up to an S-7. My receiving equipment: C.Crane CC SW Pocket receiver and CC twin coil ferrite antenna.

AM DX Log: Two Birds with One Stone

I logged two new stations on the same frequency at the same time. The two stations, WTNT and CKAC, faded in and out in tandem on 730 kc for about a half hour while I tried to identify them. WTNT was amazing catch since it is transmitting only 25 watts!

Home sick, but feeling good enough this morning to turn on the radio and listen to the static. Logged four new ones!

• WIZZ in Greenfield, MA on 1520 kc. Oldies format, the station transmits 10 kW 68 miles NNE

• WQEA416 in Southington, CT on 1670 kc. CT DOT traffic advisory station transmitting 10 W 3 miles E

• WARV in Warwick, RI on 1590 kc  (my first logging on 1590). Religious format, the station transmits 5 kW 78 miles E

• WPQH451 in Rocky Hill, CT on 1610 kc. CT DOT traffic advisory station transmitting 10 W 14 miles ENE

• 1759Z on 1440 kHz, WNYG transmitting 1 kW from Medford, NY, 55 miles SE, S-2

AM DX Log: WCHE and WTHE

Timing is everything!

Late yesterday afternoon, I was listening to WWKB (nee WKBW) from Buffalo on 1520 kHz. I could hear a weaker station under WWKB. Turning the external antenna about 90 degrees nulled out WWKB and I caught WCHE in West Chester, PA just as it was signing off. When the Star Spangled Banner ended, I heard an even weaker station: WTHE in Mineola, NY.

I caught a nice one this evening at 0010Z: WPRR in Ada, Michigan, 646 miles away on 1680 kHz. WPRR transmits with a mere 680 watts.
