I recently acquired (via eBay) new postcards depicting Holy Land in my hometown, Waterbury. I just added them to my Holy Land, Batman! page. You can tell which ones are new by the word NEW at the beginning of the new postcards' descriptions.
By the way, I am always on the lookout to add Waterbury Holy Land postcards to my collection, so if you have any you don’t see below that you wish to unload, please let me know.
I wanted to thank you for posting the vintage Holy Land images. I grew up in the Waterbury area, but moved away as a child, and I have extremely fond but very spotty memories of the site.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for old photos of the site as research for a graphic novel I'm writing/drawing whose protagonist grew up down the hill and has a deep bond with the place, but other than your photos, all I've been able to find are images of utter devastation. I live a thousand miles away in Georgia, and I'm finding research beyond the "kitschy-cult-weirdness" crowd very difficult. It's sad.
If you have any other images you've come across that you haven't shared, or any possible leads even for people I could talk to that might have better memories of the place than I do (for instance, I was only inside the Catacombs once, and all I can remember was a mannequin St. Sebastian shot through with about a dozen arrows), I'd really appreciate it.

P.S. I see you live in Wolcott. I have no idea how old you are, but my mom and her three sisters all grew up in Wolcott and went to high school there. Do you know the Schmitt family at all? (Jack Schmitt's Harten House)?
